An Introduction to Unit Testing in Python.
Now writing the unit tests or not is your call. You just need to be aware that it could be a tedious task. You might tackle this to learn unit-testing or consider writing acceptance (end-to-end) tests first, and start writing unit tests when you'll change the code or add new feature to the project.
The method I am demonstrating is the way I learned to write unit tests from the source of CPython itself. To get started I first create a test file, then import the unittest module, next define the testing class, and lastly, define each test case as a new function in the testing class.
However, if you have existing C unit tests that you just want to execute, then rewriting them to conform to a new framework probably isn’t worth the effort. Equally, writing a testrunner that is flexible enough to run all or a subset of the tests, that can output the results in JUnit or other formats, or that can filter results into concise reports probably isn’t worth the effort either.
There's a lot of C code that is easily applicable to unit testing (I'll be talking about unit testing on the PC rather than on the target itself) as long as you stay clear of the 'bottom' layer: the stuff that talks directly to the microcontroller peripherals.
Test-Driven Development TDD: Unit Testing should be done along with the Python, and for that developers use Test-Driven Development method. In TDD method, you first design Python Unit tests and only then you carry on writing the code that will implement this feature.

By the way, we could use another testing framework, Karma, to run our Mocha code under the browser, but it is my humble opinion that if unit tests can run under Node (and today you can write code that runs under Node and under the browser very easily), then they should, as they are easier to run and debug.
